My cousin took me to see Daft Punk for my birthday a few years back. I’m pretty sure I cried when the show started. The stage lit up and “Robot Rock” mashed up with “Oh Yeah” started BLARING out of the speakers, into the air, down to the floor, up through my feet and straight into my head. I nearly fell apart in sheer bliss during “Brainwasher,” got on my knees, and bowed down to the gods that are Daft Punk.

This was in 2007. Obviously not the birth year of electronic music…But before bros, before neon clothing raged through trendy stores, before doing MDMA was kewl, before every dingus with an iPod and a tank top started hitting up Coachella, before everyone thought they were DJ’s, before LMFAO hit the scene and before fucking Avicii was being played on 102.7 KIIS FM…Come on guys…Where did all the DIRTY shit go..? I don’t care how many pictures Rihanna has of herself rolling a J with one hand in a bathing suit…”We Fell In Love In A ~~Homeless~~ Hopeless Place” is my 12 year old cousin’s favorite song…Meaning: HOW BADASS CAN ANY OF THIS CRAP POSSIBLY BE????

Yeah, I’m judging. It’s true. And to me, the term EDM stands for “Exuberant DOUCHE Movement.” Don’t get me wrong, you might see me at some sort of electro music festival here and again. I love a good rave (sorry mom…) and I won’t even be hating it, believe you me. I don’t call this snobbery, I call it knowing the difference. Rising above the trend…Having a better understanding and appreciation for what you’re listening to, knowing its roots. Because so many people recently have turned this EDM shit into a lifestyle, so to speak. Don’t compare this “EDM” to the birth of “Rock’n’roll.” Wearing a neon tank top from American Apparel does NOT make you progressive. You might as well call yourself a hard core Nickelback fan, which is quite possibly the most dumbed down mainstream of genres…It’s not Rock’n’roll, it’s embarrassing.

My point is, unless you have a true understanding of what the fuck you’re choosing to LIVE YOUR LIFE by (doing hard drugs, rocking out with your cock out on the regular to Tommy Trash or Swedish House Mafia or Kaskade and whatnot…) you better DAMN WELL be educated, never mindless. That being said, if you don’t know who the founding fathers and pioneers of electronic music are (Art of Noise, Kraftwerk, Wendy Carlos, Juan Atkins, Daft Punk…etc. etc.) then you should not be allowed to mindlessly dick around self-importantly in a neon tank top and headband wailing, “HOLLUR, EDM!” like ya own the damn joint. You feel me????

UPDATE: Before people get their panties in a twist and misunderstand what I am trying to say…Let me explain: I am speaking of a type of human we might socially refer to as a “Poser.” I’m referring to those who are entirely mindless. I’m not talking about those who have a genuine adoration for a certain genre or artist.
